This combination of Victorian London and steam technology is known as steampunk -a science fiction subgenre that is defined by its four Gs: goggles, gadgets, gears, and guns. An example of the gadgetry is Alexia’s parasol with its abundance of hidden spring-loaded weaponry. Steam-driven and spring-loaded tools, weapons, and transportation (especially dirigibles) enhance the lives of the characters. Although she is human, she has supernaturals among her top advisers. The vampires live in "hives" ruled by their queens, and the werewolves live in pack houses ruled by their alphas.Įven Queen Victoria is involved in the supernatural world. In Alexia’s world, England has both a human and a supernatural populace, with werewolves and vampires taking their places alongside humans in high society. As a result of her soullessness, Alexia's touch causes supernatural creatures to become human for as long as she keeps touching them, so some supernaturals see her as a threat. Her most unusual characteristic is that she has no soul, thus the title of book 1. The Star Dwellers (The Dwellers #2) by David Estes. The series begins in an alternate London in the late 1800s where Alexia Tarabotti is a twenty-six-year-old, free-thinking spinster. The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey #2) by Julie Kagawa.Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1) by Gail Carrige.Changeless (Parasol Protectorate #2) by Gail Carriger.Gabriel's Rapture (Gabriel's Inferno #2) by Sylvai. She is the perfect choice and executes this like a well seasoned pro. I’m am certain that her narration has as much to do with how well I like the series as the words themselves. Anyway, it was really good and I moved on to the next book quite quickly.Įmily Gray does such a stellar job with this narration. The story is witty in places that almost give you the sense that the author his sharing a private joke with you as the reader personally. Yet, that never detracted from my enjoyment. The plot isn’t necessarily totally predicable, but I could see a few things coming. Although, there is a prize in there somewhere. The chemistry between Alexia and Lord Maccon is sizzling despite the lack of sex in this book. They are rich with personality and distinctive characteristics that make them real. Don’t however think her characters are cookie cutter. The vampires are pretty standard issue but the werewolves have a different twist. This world is different than most that includes werewolves. So, we are introduced into this word and boy what a world. Reading back to back sometime mashes things together. Okay, I’m trying to remember this book, because to be honest I’ve already move on and current halfway through book three.
